So today we didn’t actually arrive in port until 12
noon. This was not the original port we
were supposed to stop at, that was Puerto Chiapas but this port had a big storm
and they have to dredge the area so that the ships can dock again, not sure how
long it will be before they can dock again. The cruise terminal area here is
really just a very small shopping area with a large number of small gift areas.
They did have some demos of weaving, coffee, cocoa and coconuts, they also have
a small jade museum that has some information about jade in the area, a film and
a gift shop. The nearest town is at
least 1 ½ hours away by bus if the roads are good and there are no accidents,
so it is a 3 hour round trip drive to the town of Antigua which is an old colonial city and world UNESCO
site near a few volcanos. If you ae here and want to take an excursion I would definitely
book through the ship as they guarantee that the tour gets back to the ship on
time. There was a tour that was supposed
to go out and there was an accident on the road and there was a 2 hour delay
and the tour was cancelled. All we did
was go ashore check out the little shops grabbed a worry doll ornament for the
Christmas tree, check out the other shops and then head back to the ship.
Guatemala Jade
The show tonight in the theatre was a fellow called Kwame
Michael Remy and his show featured Jazz, Soul, Rhythm & Blues, Motown and
Boardway, he actually toured with the Broadway show Kinky boots and
Dreamgirls. We skipped his first show because
of the ball game but I wish we had watched it, he was fantastic.
Sea Day
Today we decided to do some more laundry because I only
brought one pair of shorts and a skort along with my tank tops and it has been
so hot and humid that I am sweating so much I can only wear them one day each.
One of the things I have been learning for future trips is not to bring as many
evening clothes because you can wear them numerous times because you only wear
them for dinner and then the rest of the evening. I brought a simple black long
skirt and a black cardigan and just switch out the tops. I didn’t need as many sundresses and dress
pants but luckily being able to do laundry has been great. The laundry is located near the back of the ship and we discovered that there is a back deck which has loungers, so we go there while the laundry is washing and drying, it is covered and not very busy, great place to get away from the crowds. Will also come in handy going through the canal.
We did a couple more enrichment series talks during the morning and then headed to the up to the top deck to read and enjoy the sun. We did go to a talk in the afternoon about future cruising with Princess and how to find good deals on various cruises. Turns out the best deals are to look for repositioning cruises. They have more sea days than other cruises and they basically happen either in the spring or the fall when they are moving ships from one location to another for the season. This Panama Cruise is a prime example. They had to get the Coral Princess from it’s Alaska run in the summer down to the Caribbean for the winter. Another example is when they move the ships from the Caribbean to Europe in the spring and then back to the Caribbean in the Fall.
Tonight was dress to impress in the MDR which meant Beef
Wellington or Lamb for dinner. I
actually had the salmon with a leeks and mashed potatoes. This was so good that
I made some mashed potatoes when I got home with some sautéed leeks in them.
Very delicious.
